Player Analysis
The Good
- Footwork – Quick feet in tight spaces. Changes direction on a dime.
- Play Strength – Compact, low center of gravity. Runs through many arm tackles. Puts his head down and faces defenders head on.
- Acceleration – Hits holes with speed and can be gone in the blink of an eye.
- Ball Security – Only 2 fumbles in nearly 500 career touches. Had the longest streak in country for carries without a fumble.
- Longevity – Only 1 season with a full body of work means he still has a lot of tread on the tires.
The Bad
- Lack of Pass Catching – Was not used as a pass catcher in college (19 career receptions). Not seen as a threat in this regard.
- Pass Blocking – Sometimes lacks effort or shows intentions much too early. Can fail to get square.
- Discipline – Can get caught trying to improvise when it isn’t necessary.
Overall Assessment
PRE-DRAFT: Walker began his career at Wake Forest due to lack of scholarship offers. After 2 seasons there, he felt as though he was unable to realize his full potential and transferred to Michigan State. The move proved to be the correct decision as he was a Heisman finalist and won the Doak Walker Award for best RB in the country. Walker is an electric runner with a fantastic combination of power, speed, and agility. He may fall a bit in the NFL Draft due to lack of experience catching the ball, but he does possess the skills to add that to his repertoire in the NFL. I would not be surprised if he has the best rookie season of any of this year’s running backs.
