Player Analysis
The Good
- Experience – Four years of starting experience and took a huge step forward in production in 2021.
- Arm Strength – Can make downfield throws. Enough velocity to beat coverage.
- Throws on the Run – Possesses ability to roll to his right and make off balance throws.
- Blitz Reads – Identifies blitzes and is able to evade rushers in the backfield to avoid sacks.
The Bad
- Hand Size – It has to be mentioned. The 8.5″ measurement is one of the smallest ever. For reference, Ryan Tannehill has the smallest hands of any current NFL starter at 9″.
- Ball Security – Fumbled 26 times in college, potentially due to the small hands.
- Poise – Has a tendency to get “happy feet” and dance around, even with a clean pocket.
- Overly Aggressive – Chooses to throw 50/50 balls far too often which results in unnecessary interceptions.
Overall Assessment
PRE-DRAFT:
Kenny Pickett had the opportunity to leave for the NFL after the 2020 season, but decided to return to Pitt for another year. This ended up being a great decision as he eventually became a Heisman finalist and has likely worked himself into a first round pick. Of this year’s group of quarterbacks, Pickett is likely the most “pro ready” due to his years of starting experience playing in a scheme that forced him to work through progressions. He’s not a “scrambler” but he’s also not afraid to make things happen with his feet if needed. He has the ability to be a starting quarterback in the NFL, but definitely temper your expectations.
